The A/V department (also known as audio-visual) is responsible for setting up and operating equipment for in-school and after-school events such as LOTs, award ceremonies, and much more. Students work with equipment such as PA speakers, audio mixer boards, microphones, projectors, TVs, and more.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to set up and operate sound reinforcement equipment for various live events, ensuring optimal sound quality and coverage.
- Students will gain proficiency in setting up and calibrating video projection systems, including projectors, screens and video sources.
Audio/Video Activities
Hilo High School is host to many events that require audio/video reinforcement, including spirit rallies, school assemblies, meetings, special presentations and parties! Students in KVIKS A/V will be able to meet the learning objectives by participating in these kinds of events.
Training Offered
- ON-THE-JOB: Most of the skills needed to become a proficient audio/video user will be provided at the activities mentioned above.
- DEDICATED TRAINING: At times, training may be offered to provide specific skills in preparation for an activity.
Activity Roles
A/V Technician: A crew member performing an audio/video task such as setting up equipment, operating the sound board, adjusting microphones, playing music, projection, etc.
A/V Supervisor: A crew member who is assigned to lead an A/V team at the activity. This person is the point of contact with the client so that all the things they need at the activity are met. This person can perform any of the tasks an A/V Technician is responsible for.
Audio/Video Leadership Roles
A/V Head – This person coordinates and trains the crew interested in audio/video to set up, operate and put away A/V equipment at events. This person is the point of contact for those working in the A/V Department. When the A/V Chair is unavailable any available A/V Specialist can be used.
A/V Specialists – These people are responsible and well-trained operators of A/V equipment and can train other A/V crew members.
Types of Equipment
For traditional events, we utilize Bose Systems that provide an all-in-one simplified experience for audio reinforcement. We also use passive sound systems such as Yamaha audio mixers, passive speakers, and powered monitor speakers.
From time to time, students may be able to use a digital Behringer X32 or X32 Compact system and S-16 digital snake.
For those interested in broadcasting, they will also learn announcer consoles and headsets.
For video projection, we use short throw, bulb and laser projectors and screens in addition to televisions.
